B.A. History, UCLA '03; Currently 3rd Year of MDIV Program at Fuller Theological Seminary
Josh comes from a long line of preachers, respectively, 5 generations on his mother's side and 3 on his father's. Coming from a family of 3 boys was incredibly adventurous, competitive, and a blessing. Each son now serves in ministry alongside their father, Rev. Dr. Isaac Canales, at Mission Ebenezer Family Church. After lettering in both, Football and Baseball, at Carson HS, he went on to be drafted by the Oakland A's in the 19th Round of the MLB Draft. Josh opted for college and accepted a scholarship from the University of Florida. As a freshman, he was part of the 1998 SEC Championship team and played an instrumental role in their advancement to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
During his junior season at UF, Josh transferred to UCLA during the middle of the year, where he would go on to help UCLA win the PAC-10 in 2000. Upon the completion of his senior campaign, he received All Pac-10 First Team honors in Varsity Baseball as a shortstop at UCLA and was drafted in the 16th Round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. After 3 seasons of professional baseball, having reached AAA with the Las Vegas 51's (LA Dodgers), God called Josh into the ministry.
Since then, it has been his desire to reach at-risk youth for Christ. In 2003, he began ministering in the South Bay Region of Los Angeles, using sports as a medium to draw student-athletes nearer to the heart of God. He founded the Rock Youth Center at Mission Ebenezer Family Church, a community sports complex aimed at reaching inner-city youth. The Rock Ministry serves over 250 youth weekly. Currently, he is the Director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Urban Los Angeles and is a Preaching Pastor at Mission Ebenezer Family Church. As an inspirational speaker, he aspires to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to see souls saved for the Kingdom of God.
He has a God-given gift to lead and develop people for ministry. Being in the second largest city in the nation has provided great potential for developing people of all ages for the service of the Lord. Josh is married to Bunmi, a former professional Track Athlete out of UCLA (wife of 7 years), and they have 2 boys, Elisha Michael (3) and Judah James (1).
